A recent bill introduced in late January of 2025 by Mississippi State Senator Bradford Blackmon is arguably one of the most nonsensical bills I’ve ever heard of being presented, and it furthers the false narrative that people in Mississippi are uneducated.
Senator Blackmon’s “Contraception Begins at Erection Act” would make it unlawful for “a person to discharge genetic material without the intent to fertilize an embryo.” The bill seeks to fine men $1,000 for a first offense, $5,000 for a second offense and $10,000 for any subsequent offenses.
Explaining the bill, the senator wrote, “All across the country, especially here in Mississippi, the vast majority of bills relating to contraception and/or abortion focus on the woman’s role when men are fifty percent of the equation. This bill highlights that fact and brings the man’s role into the conversation.”
As someone who grew up and spent over 25 years in the state of Mississippi and who constantly has to fight to disprove the notion that Mississippians are all ignorant uneducated people who can’t read, write, or wear shoes, this bill makes me even more mad because it furthers that stereotype. All Mississippians should be ashamed of this senator and this bill.
Senator Blackmon misses the point of pro-life bills and abortion bans. He seems to think that those are all about “controlling women’s bodies,” so he thinks there should be one to “control men’s bodies.” Pro-life bills that restrict or ban abortions do not have anything to do with controlling anyone’s bodies. They adhere to the science of embryology which shows that from the moment of conception, when the male sperm meets the female egg, both cease to exist and what is in their place is a unique living and whole human being at its earliest stage of development. It has its own DNA and genetics distinct from their parents and fits all the biological criteria of an individual living being of the species Homo Sapien. Contrary to what abortion advocates say, this isn’t a religious view; it is a basic biological fact that is taught in medical schools across the world and is in all leading embryology textbooks.
The essence of every pro-life bill is that because they are human beings, the law should protect their life and killing them should not be legal. It has nothing to do with controlling anyone’s bodies, but instead deals with protecting the bodies of the most innocent and vulnerable in society. This is something that the Senator fails to comprehend.
Another point that makes Mississippi look bad is Senator Blackmon’s ignorance or blatant refusal of biology. Like many pro-abortion “internet trolls” I have encountered, he seems to equate male sperm with that of a child. His bill seeks to fine men for ejaculation in response to pro-life people making it illegal to abort their children. I’ve written about this absurd comparison before. His comparison is idiotic and childish and just plain ignorant. Instead of representing the fine people of Mississippi and making them look good, he furthers the harmful and incorrect stereotype that all Mississippians are ignorant and uneducated.
Instead of lowering himself to the level of an “internet troll,” Senator Blackmon could present a bill that would actually hold men accountable for their part in procreation. Something like introducing a bill that requires mandatory child support be paid for any man who fathers a child with someone they aren’t married to? That would have a twofold effect: it would make men think twice before acting on their impulses, and it would help single mothers in taking care of their children.
Thankfully, this bill died in committee just 2 days ago.
