Human Defense Initiative helped Mama M in July 2020, when her husband lost his work due to the pandemic, causing them to spend three months without any income. Her littlest son was born at the beginning of the pandemic and was born with a rare defect and milk allergy requiring special care and formula they were struggling to afford. She, like many families, was trying desperately to apply for assistance but in the meantime was struggling to put food on the table for her three children. Here is what Mama M. told us:

“Thank you. I wanted to thank everyone who helped my family in our time of need. It was very hard to reach out, and admit that we needed help. With everything that has happened it was a blessing to be able to have that opportunity to do so. To have people that I’ve never met reach out, and send my baby and family items we desperately needed, was a true blessing.

In the Bible it states ‘Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.’ (1 Peter 5:6-7) I then I had to be humble and I prayed and asked for help. ‘Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Your father in heaven (will) give you good gifts to those who ask him.’ (Matthew 7:7, 11)

That’s what I did. I had to let go and believe that my God would understand our pain, and anxiety. That he would not leave or forsake us during this time. So I did, I let go, and he found each and everyone of you. He then asked for your help, and without hesitation you did. You bought formula to feed him, blankets to keep him warm, food to warm our bellies, a crib he can sleep on, and rest his head. You all helped us more than you can imagine, and my words cannot express how much you’ve done for my family. You’ve restored my faith in humanity, that there is good out there, and that God does listen. I hope that one day I’m able to return the favor to someone else in need, as you have all done for me.

Every item I’ve received has been used, and every time I grab one of those items I think of the amazing person that took the time to think of my family. I share with my children the joys of being able to love thy neighbor, and to be thankful for the gifts no matter how big or small. The items you’ve donated made it possible to save a bit of money for my son’s surgery, utilities, and to catch up on our rent payment plan. For this I’m thankful and can only hope that you accept my appreciation, and gratitude for all you’ve done.

May the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge, reward you fully for what you have done. Ruth 2:12

With love,Mama M.”
